School 2010-2011 Ends

Obvious I am a little behind, but for memory purposes we have concluded the school year in July, before all the family vacations to Utah and Montana. I was Hoping that we would part school during the summer, but the schools workbooks didn't make the cut for some reason in the girls packing. I know, why not huh- Why didn't the girls pack up all their work to take along. Their fabulous mother did however manage to pack up their reading and math, of which they weren't very happy to do in Utah. But shortly after that it somehow died down. Now for the 4-1-1 of the rest of the school year.

Liahona accomplished much this year. The highlight is that she has discovered that she has a pure love in horses, and has been taking horse riding classes from spring to summer. As of which she has 1 more riding class, before the session is over until Fall. She has successful taken her first end of the year CAT test. She was very nervous but did well. An we were greatly surprised to see her results. She is a genius in math, but is still her least favorite subject. If you ask her she would say, "I do not like math, I am not good at it." But her test results will tell you otherwise. She has grown to be a book worm, something that Eric and I were not- but I am proud of her become such an amazing reader.
In Her Last Quarter She Completed:
Reading and Writing, she read 1-19 magic tree house books, made 19 book reports, read guides books, and completed online quizzes.
Math, past double addition, subtraction, regrouping, and got down multiplication, and the beginnings of division. Loves to do graphs, charting, and fractions.
Science, finished physical science with human anatomy with lapbook.
Animal science created lapbooks for horses, bears, jaguars, and penguins. Learned about Arctic and Antarctic land and sea animals. Learned about North American animals too.
Geography, she completed all the 50 states workbook, knows the abbreviations and can sing the song in less the 1 minute.
Religion, she completed her pioneer lapbook, and apostles lapbook. She know more about her pioneer heritage and can knows all the names of the leaders of the church from the 1st Presidency to the Quorum of the 12 Apostles, and can sing a song about it too.
If you were to ask her on a scale of 1- 10 with how much she liked being homeschool this year and the things that she learned she would tell you 9 because she had to do chores at home. =)

Tamara cruised into her learning gear this year. When she was learning about something she liked there was no stopping her. She also shown some of her independence with taking her good ol' time when it came to a subject that she did not like as much. She would tell you that she likes math and thinks it is fun, and reading too. But did not like to do history and geography as much in her workbook. She went from trying out a homeschool group full time which made her a full time public schooler, to being back home doing work at home. She likes to try new things, but likes to change her mind about them just as fast. She is glad to have to option to choose what she likes to do the best to help her to grow and learn.

In Her Last Quarter She Completed:
Reading and Writing, she read 3 Cam Jansen books and 3 Junie B. Jones books. These authors are her favorite she says. And with each book she completed a book report.
Math, is a whiz in addition and subtraction, can almost just look at the problem and instantly know the answers. Likes to do charts and graphs also.
Science, Created a plant and flower lapbook for spring. And worked on family's secret garden in backyard.
Animal Science, learned about cats, and dolphins and made lapbooks for each animal.
Geography and History was accomplished to Unit 4 and to be continued into second grade. She did not like these Abeka Reader books with comprehension questions at the end.
Religion, she made her own Apostles lapbook and learned all the names of the 1st Presidency and 12 Apostles and can sing a song about it too.
If you were to ask her how much she liked school this year on a scale of 1-10 she would tell you an 8 because she said she doesn't like all the chores too, plus there was some harder math mom made her do at the end of the year.

I would say this year despite the very difficult move from Nebraska went rather well. I am pleased that they girls are learning and growing at the rates that they are. It is a pure joy to see them learn and understand new concepts of truth and knowledge.

Tamara's School Work This Quarter

Here is one of her many Lapbooks that she created this Quarter.
Here is her Animal Science Lapbook on Sheep.

Tamara has created 12 Lapbooks.
Three are for Animal Science: Chipmunk, Sheep, and Horses. And is currently working on her Cat Lapbook.

Five are for her reading books:The Cat in the Hat, The Cat in the Hat Comes Back, A Skunk in Camp, A Fun Week of Miss Dee, and Garfield The Thanksgiving Thief. And is currently working on her First Chapter Book.

Two are for more Science Topics: Space Lapbook, and The Water Cycle.

And her last Lapbook was for Religion, on Prophets. And is currently working on her Apostle Lapbook. She has learned all her Articles of Faith, can sing them or say them. She knows all the commandments and has learned a song to even sing about them as well.

She is enjoying her Karate classes at a Home School group here. She even chose to be Karate Girl for Halloween. And she is learning quite quickly, as the teacher told me once after class. She is very coordinated and moves fast, too. She just wanted to try it out for Caleb and now she has a love for it.

Social Studies she has learned about: What is a community and living in a community, Problem Solving, Using Calendars. And is currently learning the Biography about Jane Addams.

Geography she has learned to use and read a compass rose. Is currently building and learning how to read and use maps.

Math she is on the quest with learning more about clocks, money, and double digits with adding and subtraction. She does well with math, and seems to like it for now.

If you ask Tamara what she thinks about being Home schooled she would say, "I LOVE IT."

Liahona's School Work This Quarter

Here is One of her many Lapbooks created so far this year. This is her Animal Science Duck Lapbook.

Liahona has created 7 Lapbooks.
Three are for Animal Science: Ducks, Pigs, and Meerkats. And is currently working on her Horse Lapbook.
Three are for her chapters books: The Secret Garden, The Story of Doctor Dolittle, and Peter Pan. And is currently working on her Thanksgiving Chapter Lapbook.

And her last Lapbook was for religion, on Prophets. And is currently working on her Apostle Lapbook. She has learned all her Articles of faith, can sing them or say them. She knows all the commandments and has learned a song to even sing about them as well.

She is enjoying her Art classes at a Home school group here. She still considers herself to be an Artist, and we hope to keep her reaching high.

History she has learned about: Christopher Columbus, John Smith, Pocahontas, Miles Standish, Squanto, and William Penn. Just in time for Thanksgiving too. And is currently learning about Benjamin Franklin.

Geography she has learned the whole 50 States song, and has 5 states left to learn specifics about. Next she will be learning the capitals.

Math she is undertaking long division, multiplication, adding and subtracting fractions. She prefers lots of hands on learning when it comes to math, because it is her least favorite subject-that seems to make her break out into hives when you mention "Math Time."

But over all she finds herself "Grateful" she says to be schooled at home. She loves being home like Caleb. =)

Whistle While You Work

I caught the kids whistling while they were doing their school work one day. It was the cutest thing cuz it wasn't just 1, it was ALL of them. =)
(Remember to pause the music on the right side bar before you push play.)

First Day of School

Aug 1st Began the New School Year for us. The kids were so excited to start up a new year of learning and growing. We just didn't think that we would be learning and growing in the way life threw at us. Life is full of unwanted learning curves, we are hoping that down the road we will be able to understand why our family of six is now to five. Life is hard.
